I was asked the other day if I had step by step instructions on how I did my hair. It was very flattering to be asked this, because I would have never thought that my work would inspire questions as to how it was done. So I will do my best to explain how I did it.
As I have mentioned before as far as parting my hair I didn’t do much with that. I took the existing parts I had from my SL, combed the SL pattern out and replaced it with a small braid. Now to tighten the new growth I just followed the Nappyloc method (which is also the SL method, just can’t call it that unless you have spent $1,500.00 to take the class and you have the “special secret tool”).
*1* The first and most important thing I do is make sure that my hair is sectioned off, so I don’t have to worry about stray hairs getting caught in with a lock it doesn’t belong to, some people call this marring two locks, I call it a pain in my butt.
*2* Take a lock fold it close to the tip and thread it through my NL tool, like trying to thread a needle. I do it this way so what ever loose ends I may have wont fray by it being pushed though the hole. Now the NL tool has a cinched tip so you can secure the hair between the cinch and not have the tool fall off your hair. In some cases my locks are too small to be fully secured so I just hold it as I work.
This is a picture of the Nappyloc tool the smaller part of the tool can be adjusted with needle nose pliers. When I bought the tool it was suggested to me that if I wanted to make the cinch smaller put a rag or paper towel over the NL tool before I use to pliers so the pliers won’t damage the metal.
*3* With the tip of the NL tool and the hair cinched on the opposite end I insert the tip East to West (3 o’clock to 9 o’clock) into the new growth closes to where the lock is forming.

*4*Pull the tool and the hair through and remember, or say out loud turn 1, I think that it’s important to count the turns as your doing them so in case you have to stop or the tool slips out of your hand or what ever might happen that will hinder your flow you know where to pick up again.
*5* Again with the tip of the NL tool with the hair cinched on the opposite end insert the tip into the new growth closes to turn 1 south to north (6 o’clock to 12 o’clock) and pull the tool and hair through Turn 2.
*6* Insert the tip of the tool with the hair cinched on the opposite end into the new growth closes to turn 2 West to East (9 o’clock to 3 o’clock) and pull the tool and the hair though Turn 3.
*7* Insert the tip of the tool with the hair cinched on the opposite end into the new growth closes to turn 3 North to South (12 o’clock to 6 o’clock) pull the tool and the hair though Turn 4. This completes a full rotation. Just repeat over and over again until there isn’t any more new growth to tighten.
***Important information***
I think is important to remember to make sure that a full rotation can be done before you start working on one. Meaning make sure you can complete turns 1-4 on the lock that is being retighten. I say this because when you come back to do your hair again you don’t have to try and remember where you left off. You will know that you always start East to West and always end on North to South.

These are the instructions that the sister who sells the nappylocs tool has on the video and her book. She has more detail and visuals. I bought then from her happy to send her $100 for them (rather than the $1500 for SL). If anyone isn't confident about using the tool (which is $15) the video is worth it. There are even suggestions for what do do if the tool slips off the lock.
The only modification that I have made is that I use a latch hook tool to thread some of my locks onto the nappylock tool. This is faster in the back where I can't see.

Yeah I bought the business in the box before I got my SL, but as I was writing my step by step instructions I was actually retighten one of my locks I wanted to make sure I explained it easily and didn’t leave out anything. I never thought about just taking the instructions from the book.
Great instructions! Your NL tool is gold I noticed because mine is silver. Do they have more colors now or is just gold or silver? Mine is sterling silver and has blackened so I need to clean it w/ a jewelry cleaner to revive the silver again. Do you have the same problem?
Mine is silver too, dont know why it showed up looking gold.
Hi Saabira. Great job you've done - although I'm always sad to see someone say goodbye to Sisterlocks.
By the way how did you comb out your Sisterlocks? One by one? How long had you had them? From your details on the blog you had them for over one year? Please share as I know someone who wants to take her Sisterlocks down. Was it a tedious process?
Thanks. Amba
When I decided to take my SL down I had had them for 4 months, and only about 10 were settling which I left alone. I used a rat tail comb and the pointy part of the comb was metal not plastic that probably made it easier to get in between the rotations.
I think it's wonderful that you took control of your journey and made it something you could be proud of! Being a DIYr brings so much satisfaction doesn't it?
Your BLs look great. I'm glad I found your blog cause I like being able to follow other BL journeys.
I really like your blog. I'm sure there are some SL consultants and trainees lurking who are quite distressed at the detail you have included in your post!
I kinda "figured it all out" from some other very detailed blogs such as yours.
Even though I don't have the slightest inclination to become a do-it-yourselfer, I must admit that it's nice to know what going on up there during my retightenings!
Keep blogging!
Thanks so much for these instructions! I'm going to be ordering the nappylocs tool soon and maybe the dvd but these instructions give me a chance to see everything before hand. It doesn't sound nearly as scary as I first thought. Thanks again!
Good blog! I just started doing my own retightenings of sisterlocks due to circumstances beyond my control. It encouraged me to read this post.
You are so very welcome, I thinks it’s a beautiful thing when not only women become free of the lye but to take control of there own hair, not having to become a "slave of the chair" I love it!!!
Great detail... Thanks for sharing.
I'm curious, Saabira: why did you comb out the Sisterlocks first? As you intended to keep the partings, couldn't you just carry on retighting with the Nappylocks tool?
That’s what I intended on doing in the first place, but I took them out b/c the ends of my hair were completely unraveled and the curl pattern was non existence, I can only assume that it was from the color I used a month before I got the SL installed or the pattern that was done was not tight enough. If you take a look at my older post “A girl and her hair back in November, you can see pictures of my hair and see what I was talking about.” The shrinkage I could deal with, and all the other stages, but with just about every lock on my head had open frayed ends like that was very discouraging and I felt I had to do something about it.
This post has wonderful information and your hair looks good.
i believe this is the BEST explanation evah!
This is a great tutorial....thanks for sharing. One Love
Thank you, this is really great to get this kind of information. I have been SL's for 9 months now and will be going to the retighting class coming to Chicago, May 17th. I am trying to make the transition into the DIY club due to finanical reasons. My Consultant told me that I am a 3 PT, but did not explain what it means and did not seem willing to. These instructions on YOUR journey has helped me understand the rotation process and makes me feel less intimidated. Whew, now I really did think I can me a DIY'er. Godsped
You are so welcome, thats what one of the reason why I wanted to start a blog. I want to help out as many people as I can. It’s a liberating thing when you know you can do something yourself and not have to depend on anyone.
Your instructions are right on point. I am an strong believer of DIY. I thought about buying the Nappyloc's tool, but decided against it. Instead I use a small bobbypin. Works like a charm...Thanks for the instructions. Very nicely done:o)
thank you so much saabira! you blog has helped me understand diy locs so much better! If your stylist does 3PT does that mean you only need to do 3 instead of four rotations? Thanks! I love your blog, great photos!
You are so very welcomed. I would say that if your consultant was doing a 3pt rotation and you are pleased with that then continue. The only difference between how many rotations from what I understand is the more rotations the tighter the locs is. So that’s really up to you.
I stumbled across this blog and I read all your posts. This one struck me the most because it's so informative.
I wanted SLs for 2 years, couldn't afford them but wanted the look. Someone did some tool assisted locks, I liked them but they had a few bumps and knots in them and they were too big. I picked up on how to do a tool assited lock, I used my crochet tool that I was acquaninted with for years to create 2 or 3 locks where she had only one. The only thing was that my parts were so jacked up and I didn't like the look. Now I'm 80%done with taking them down and plan on getting sls like I wanted to in the 1st place. But if you see my hair on my blog, you know it'll cost me...this blog makes we wanna take that control back perhaps go with braidlocks, or another method...Thanks for posting this!
Hi and thank you for posting this information. I am unable to go to my consultant anymore (out of frustration and financial issues) after being locked for a little over three months. She told me that I have a four pattern, which she says is the tightest. When I am following the nappyloc instructions, does it matter which direction I start in? In other words, if I follow the nappyloc method, will it hurt what my consultant has already started? Or am I just being neurotic about my locs?
Thanks, T.
I don’t know if it will hurt your locks but it might make them look a little different when you switch up the pattern. I don’t know this for sure I’m just guessing. I have not tired a different direction myself so I cant speck from experience. If you already know the direction your consultant was doing (clockwise or counter clockwise) just stick with that direction. If you are not sure then go with the direction you feel more comfortable with. I hope that helps you out.
Hi Saabira. These are wonderful instructions. Quick questions - which size tool do you use, micro or small?
Thank you so much! I have the small size tool. I could only imagine how small the micro would be.
Hi Saabira,
I am considering getting locs but am confused. Are SLs neater looking than NLs? i.e What is the VISUAL DIFFERENCE between the two? or is the tool the only difference.
Since I have had both, visually specking the only difference with SL and NL is the tool that is used. The out come is the same, and the pattern that is done is the same
Hi Saabira,
I am considering getting locs but am confused. Are SLs neater looking than NLs? i.e What is the VISUAL DIFFERENCE between the two? or is the tool the only difference.
Oh by the way I am a guy so it would be the thicker "brotherlocs" I'd go for so would need the above questions answered in relation to brotherloc "thickness" if that makes sense.....
Thanks
It would be the same even if your locks were thicker.
So both SL and NL are EXACTLY the same in appearance and neatness but just use different tools?? I know its a bit of a sensitive subject... I'm in UK and cannot get enough info to decide which way to go... I just want the neatest look of the two. You can reply to taigerr@gmail.com if that suits you better. Much appreciated
hello!
i am trying to learn how to lock my very own hair, and have been presented with this same rotation.
i am confused though because I don't understand the "clocks".
When you say go from 3 to 9, are you saying enter the new growth closer to the right? When you say enter from 9 to 3, enter closer to the left?
What about south to north? north to south?
I'd really appreciate the help!
thanks!
Alright when its referred go from 3to 9 you enter the new growth as close as you can get it to the locked part from right to left.
Attempt at a visual demonstration on a one dimensional plane

ok. i think I almost get it!
last question...
when I'm going in, I'm literally going in from the side (i.e. east to west.)? Meaning like a sandwhich, sliding it through the two slices of bread?
and when I go from north to south, I will be entering the hair like it was a hot dog bun??? i hope u udnerstand what I mean
Yes that’s what you do and when you’re finishing up the rotation 3 (west to east) and 4 (north to south) you just got in the opposite direction.
I am soo glad for the information included on this blog. I researches SL's for over a year, but couldn't afford it. A friend installed "miracle locks" - which was supposed to be the same thing( just waaay cheaper), but she did a different 3 piece braid instead. The technique for the braid resulted in a tight rope that was very secure, but she jacked up the parts BIG TIME! I thought for once I would treat myself to someone else's work, but ended up spending 2 months taking hers out and putting my own back in. This blog and Sophia's was the greatest of help thoughout the whole process. Thanks again for sharing - that goes for everyone who believes our natural state is a journey we all can take together.
- Love yourselves as God loves you : )
I just made a comment about doing my own “braidlocs” - I wanted to share my details. The braid pattern used was a little different and goes as follows.
Version 1-1. Start with three strands as you would a braid .
2. chose a side to make added rotations - (say left hand)with that hand rotate the 2 strands twice before trading with third strand in right hand.
3. repeat. I recommend after repeating 2x that you do a regular braid rotation- just to evenly distribute usage through till the end.
Version 2- 1. begin with three strands
2. with left hand rotate 2 strands 3 times before trading with third strand in right hand
3. repeat till end.
- I practiced on a friend till it came easier and learned to regulate the tightness. You don’t want it too tight, or breakage could be a problem later on.
- Besides that I wash them and treat them as anyone would SL's
- The tool I use is a plastic yarn needle (the larger ones) that I cut the tip off and shaped to a point with a nail file. Also I bent the tip like a hook to make it less likely to hook into a neighboring lock. If the eye is too small, push a pen through till it becomes bigger. I was going to buy the NL tool, but needed to tighten my hair for a function right away – I got the needles 3 in a pack in the dollar store.
- When taking the first set out, I rubbed some water in the braid/lock to loosen things up first.
the tool I was talking about

Be blessed,

Saabira.
Thanks so much for the info. I just cut my mid back length dreadlocks off and am making the switch over to the "sistaloc" look.
I'm a big DIYr so, this information is the bomb.
My only question is how to determine what rotation to use. I know it depends on your hair type, and I'm a 4.
Then I read a blog from somebody who said they were a "Reverse 4" "4". I've no idea what that means. Think you can explain it?
Thanks in advance, And I love your Blog.
..Oh yeah...
I also forgot to ask:
How short is "too short" to start?
Since THE BIG CHOP, my hair is about an inch all over.
Thanks!

I have been re-twisting my hair for years and have wanted to try the locking tool myself since my loctician had been using it in my hair. You are amazing....I am definately going to get me one now.
What a great post!
I've had SLs for almost 3yr now and did my first retie last month. I was so proud of myself! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my consultant but it was just time to save my money and do for myself! The fact that its all a big secret finally got me to woman up and the fact that I don't see any sense in paying someone to show me how to do my own hair. I orderd the NL-Biz-in-a-box 5 days ago. I am extremly excited because I will install my baby girl's locs my self. Your post has made me much more confident that I will not ruin her hair!
Please follow my daughter's locking blog! As soon as the "box" arrives I'll begin posting on her behalf.
